Requirements

  • Fences/block walls not over 6 feet in height (measured at 3 feet from the exterior side) are exempt from a building permit per Article 7-1, § 7-1-6(B)(1)(c) — EXCEPT fences in federally patented easements (FPEs), adjacent to public right-of-way (ROW), or across natural drainage ways, which require zoning review regardless of height
  • Retaining walls not over 4 feet (measured from bottom of footing to top of wall) are exempt per § 7-1-6(B)(1)(d), provided the wall does not support a surcharge, does not impound Class I/II/IIIA liquids, and is not on a public easement
  • Retaining walls requiring a permit must be reviewed by Development Services Engineering Staff
  • Themed, perimeter, and privacy walls over 6 feet, and retaining walls over 4 feet (bottom of footer to top of wall), are billed per linear foot
  • Apply via the MyGovernmentOnline (MGO) online permit system
