A full five-day week with no midday closure, and a Friday that is one hour shorter rather than a half day - a different shape again from Chula Vista and Oxnard, which both stop at noon on Friday. The hours are published on the Development Services page rather than on the Building Division's own contact page.

Published scheduling rules

  • MISSING THE INSPECTION CUT-OFF COSTS TWO DAYS, NOT ONE, and Oceanside is the only city in this corpus that spells the penalty out: "You must request the inspection by 3:30 pm on a business day in order to receive a next business day inspection. Requests received after that time will be scheduled in 2 business days." Elsewhere the language is "the following day", which reads as a one-day slip. (General)
  • THERE ARE TWO CLASSES OF APPLICANT AND THEY HAVE DIFFERENT OBLIGATIONS. Contractors and their representatives "are required use eTRAKiT" and must first complete an eTRAKiT User Application. Homeowners can schedule an inspection in the same portal "with a permit number" and "Creating an account is not required." The professional route is the more gated one. (General)

Inspection sequence

Applies to: Building Permit

  1. 1

Request by 3:30pm or lose two days, not one

"You must request the inspection by 3:30 pm on a business day in order to receive a next business day inspection. Requests received after that time will be scheduled in 2 business days." Most cities in this corpus say a late request moves to the following day; Oceanside states the penalty is two business days, which is a different and larger cost.

  2. 2

Four ways to book, and a two-hour window once booked

"Please use eTRAKiT for scheduling inspections and to check your inspection time (2-hour window.)" Requests can also be made on the Building Inspection Request Form, by voicemail on 760-435-3925, or in person at the Building Division counter. "Inspection requests can be made 24 hours a day."

  3. 3

Homeowners do not need an account

"Homeowners and/or representatives may also schedule inspections in the eTRAKIT portal with a permit number (under "Permits", then "Search Permit".) Creating an account is not required." Contractors, by contrast, must register through the eTRAKiT User Application.

  4. 4

The duty to call is on the permit holder, and covering work before inspection is barred

"It shall be the responsibility of the owner or licensed contractor doing the work authorized by a permit to notify the Building Division when said work is ready for inspection. No portion of any building, structure, wiring, plumbing, ductwork or equipment, which is required to be inspected, shall be covered or concealed without" inspection first.
