How to Verify a Contractor's License in Montana

Which authority licenses contractors in Montana, what the credential is called, and where to check it before work starts.

Checking a licence takes a minute and is the cheapest protection available. What differs by state is WHO issues the credential and what it is called — in Montana, the details below.

Licensing in Montana

Montana registers construction contractors through the Department of Labour & Industry, anchored to the Workers' Compensation Act rather than to trade competence. Read a missing registration carefully here: incorporated contractors and any contractor WITH EMPLOYEES must register, but an independent contractor with no employees is exempt and may register voluntarily — so absence from the register does not by itself mean someone is operating unlawfully, which is the opposite of the inference Idaho invites. The search returns only currently active registrations; expired and pending applications do not appear.

Registration is not the whole picture: Montana REGISTERS construction contractors generally but LICENSES the electrical and plumbing trades by class, under a different title. Two regimes run side by side, so "registered" and "licensed" mean different things about the same job.

Electricians are licensed under MCA 37-68-102 in four defined roles — electrical contractor, master electrician, journeyman electrician and residential electrician — with the residential class a distinct credential rather than a restricted journeyman.

Plumbers are licensed under MCA 37-69-101 as master plumber or journeyman plumber, and the difference is authority rather than seniority: a master may "plan, estimate, bid, contract for, and supervise" plumbing work and may also do a journeyman's work, while a journeyman is authorised to make the installations.

Why It Matters

An unlicensed contractor can cost you more than the job. Inspectors can red-tag the work, insurers may decline a claim arising from it, and the recovery funds that exist in some states are open only to people who hired a licensed contractor. Checking the credential before work starts is the cheapest step in the whole project.
