Read on 2026-09-21 that window has closed for 2026 if the notice is current, and the notice may simply be left up year-round; confirm before relying on it.

Published scheduling rules
- TWO SCHEDULING CHANNELS EXIST AND THE WRONG ONE IS REFUSED OUTRIGHT: "Inspection requests submitted through phone or email will not be accepted for online applications." The phone route is described for permits "before the year August 2023", while the Permits page says CSS became mandatory in January 2024 - so permits obtained between those two dates are not clearly addressed by either sentence. Ask which channel your permit belongs to. (General)
- THE VIRTUAL INSPECTION PROGRAMME IS NARROW, NAMED AND ACTUALLY USABLE: nine listed project types, a specific supervisor to contact for an appointment, LifeSize video with FaceTime as an accepted alternative, and a minimum 4G requirement. If it fails mid-inspection the city attempts a field inspector the same day before pushing to the next business day. (General)
- YOUR OWN DEADLINE IS TWELVE MONTHS, AND IT IS THE ONLY DURATION THE CITY COMMITS TO ANYWHERE ON THESE PAGES: "an applicant will have up to 12 months from the date of the issued permit to request an inspection(s)." There is no published plan-check turnaround to set against it. (General)

The number of inspections per day is capped, and the city says so
"Our staff will limit the number of daily building inspections with consideration to staffing levels and reasonable customer service. If we are unable to complete a building inspection on the date requested, we will reschedule it for the following workday."

If you are not ready, the inspector does not come back that day
"We ask that you please be ready for the requested inspection as we will not return to it later and you will be required to reschedule the inspection to another day."

Which channel you use depends on how the permit was obtained
Online applications must be scheduled online: "If you applied through our online Citizen Self-Service (CSS) portal, please schedule your inspection online using your CSS login. Inspection requests submitted through phone or email will not be accepted for online applications." The phone and email route is framed for older permits - "If you have a permit before the year August 2023" - on (760) 391-4001 or inspection@indio.org, leaving name, phone number, permit number, inspection type and preferred date.

NO INTERIOR INSPECTIONS OF LIVED-IN DWELLINGS, and this one changes what work is practical
"To help ensure the safety and health of City staff, there will be no Building inspections within the interior of lived-in dwelling units where a staff person has to enter the home to complete the inspection. If an inspector can gain access from the exterior and not go through the house, then that inspection will be performed." The restriction is introduced under a Coronavirus heading but is published as current policy.

Twelve months from issuance to request an inspection
"Please note that a permit must still be applied for and received, however, an applicant will have up to 12 months from the date of the issued permit to request an inspection(s)."

Virtual inspection, by appointment with a named supervisor
Eligible projects are listed exactly: Photovoltaic Systems, Patio Covers, Water Heater Changeouts, Sewer Connections, Gas Line Extensions for BBQ and Fire Pits, HVAC Changeouts, Electrical Panel Changeouts, Reroofs, Window Changeouts. The customer needs "a smart phone, iPad or laptop with video capability" and "minimum 4G connectivity", contacts Ruben Franz at rfranz@indio.org or (760) 541-4210 with permit number, site address, inspection type, email and phone, and the inspector initiates a LifeSize video call - "The customer may alternately request to use FaceTime." Results are emailed and entered into the permitting system.

If the video inspection fails, a field inspector is attempted the same day
"If for any reason the Inspector is unable to complete the inspection via the Virtual Inspection Program, every effort will be made to route a field inspector to complete the inspection the same day. If this is not possible, the inspector will schedule a field inspection for the next business day."
