Sign Permit in Kalispell, Montana
Required before displaying, erecting, relocating, or altering most signs in Kalispell, per Kalispell Municipal Code (KMC) 27.22.160, unless the sign is exempted under KMC 27.22.050. Permanent sign permits are billed using the City's currently adopted IBC (building valuation) Fee Schedule based on the declared value of the sign; most sign types (all except wall signs of any size) additionally require Architectural Review Committee (ARC) approval. Short-duration special-event signage (banners, portable reader boards, balloons/pennants) uses a separate flat-fee Temporary Sign Authorization.

When you need this permit
- A sign permit from the Zoning Administrator is required before displaying, erecting, relocating, or altering any sign, per KMC 27.22.160(1), unless the sign is exempted under KMC 27.22.050 (exemptions include temporary construction signs, real estate signs, political signs, and A-frame sandwich boards in designated areas — exempt signs still must comply with all other ordinance provisions)
- Application submitted to the Development Services/Planning Department, (406) 758-7940, planning@kalispell.com; all blocks on the Sign Permit Application are required information — incomplete applications delay review
- Architectural Review Committee (ARC) approval is required for all signs excluding wall signs of any size; ARC submittal (site plan, dimensioned sign drawing showing color/materials/structural supports/lighting, material and color samples, site/neighborhood photos) is due no later than the Monday of the week prior to the meeting, with regular ARC meetings held the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month
- Fee for a permanent sign permit is calculated using the current adopted IBC (building valuation) Fee Schedule based on the declared value of the sign, rounded to the nearest dollar, per the Kalispell Planning Department Fee Schedule
- Signs must pass final inspection within six months of permit issuance or the permit lapses, per KMC 27.22.160
- Short-duration special-event signage (banners, portable reader boards, balloons/pennants) uses a separate Application for Temporary Sign Authorization, limited to no more than 14 days of display within any 6-month period

Tips
- Wall signs of any size are exempt from Architectural Review Committee review — freestanding, monument, and other non-wall sign types are not, and must clear the biweekly ARC meeting cycle (2nd/4th Tuesdays, submittal due the prior Monday) before permit issuance.
- Permanent sign fees track the sign's declared value against the same IBC valuation logic used for building permits — there's no flat sign-permit fee table, so budget based on the sign's actual cost.
- Confirm whether your sign is exempt under KMC 27.22.050 (e.g., certain real estate, political, or A-frame signs) before assuming a permit is required — exempt signs still must follow the ordinance's other rules.
- Temporary/special-event signage (banners, portable reader boards, balloons/pennants) is a separate $30 flat-fee product from the permanent Sign Permit, capped at 14 days of display within any 6-month period.
