When you need this permit
- Application must identify sign type (Ground, Wall, Roof, Projecting, Window, Temp/Banner, or Reface Only), height, dimensions, and total square footage, calculated per the form's own formula (L x W x number of faces, divided by 144 if measured in inches)
- If the sign is electrical, the Electrical Contractor name and phone must be provided, and an Electrical Permit # and/or photometric drawing (lighting layout, foot-candles at property lines, fixture catalog sheets) must be submitted for exterior sign lighting
- A site plan is required showing: north arrow, scale (1" = 20' minimum), street/cross-street names and rights-of-way, site access location, existing public rights-of-way and easements, visibility obstruction triangle(s), property boundaries/corners, existing and proposed ground sign locations, distance from property line to proposed ground sign(s), property and building frontage dimensions, and existing/proposed building and structure locations
- One copy of scaled drawings and elevations of each sign, colored graphics/pictures of new or change-of-copy signs, and a full/detailed inventory of existing and proposed signs must be submitted
- Depending on the project, additional submittals may be required: one copy of building floor plans, one copy of building elevations indicating wall sign locations, a Design Review Board/Board of Adjustments letter of approval, and/or a comprehensive master sign plan
- Signs and structures are not allowed in public rights-of-way and easements
- Applicant is responsible for the Plan Review Fee if the application is deemed abandoned after 180 days; the property owner remains responsible for maintenance of all property signage

Tips
- Applications deemed abandoned after 180 days shift responsibility for the Plan Review Fee to the applicant — don't let a sign application sit idle.
- Electrical signs need either an Electrical Permit number or a full photometric drawing package (layout, foot-candles at property lines, fixture catalog sheets) — decide which route applies before submitting.
- The sign code lives at Title 4, Chapter 6 of the Havre City Code — compliance is required continuously after issuance, not just at approval.
