The State Building Code is in effect in every county and city in Washington, and its minimum performance standards may not be diminished locally. A local amendment that affects single-family or multifamily residential buildings is not effective unless the State Building Code Council approves it; amendments to non-residential provisions carry no such approval requirement.

• 2021 Uniform Plumbing Code — FMC § 15.04.070: "The 2021 Uniform Plumbing Code, published by the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials, as amended by the state of Washington and published as Chapters 51-56 and 51-57 WAC, including any subsequent amendments or editions adopted by the state, is hereby adopted by reference."
• 2021 International Mechanical Code — adopted under Chapter 51-52 WAC.
• International Fire Code — adopted under Chapter 51-54 WAC.
• 2021 Washington State Energy Code — FMC § 15.04.110: "The 2021 Washington State Energy Code, adopted by the Washington State Building Code Council and published as Chapters 51-11C and 51-11R WAC, including any subsequent amendments or editions thereto, is hereby adopted by reference."
• 2017 ICC/ANSI A117.1 (accessibility) — adopted alongside the building code.
• RCW 19.27 — the Washington State Building Code beneath all of the above.
