Codes adopted

The State Building Code is in effect in every county and city in Washington, and its minimum performance standards may not be diminished locally. A local amendment that affects single-family or multifamily residential buildings is not effective unless the State Building Code Council approves it; amendments to non-residential provisions carry no such approval requirement.

  • 2021 International Building Code — together with the 2021 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code and 2017 ICC/ANSI A117.1, "published by the International Code Council as amended by the state of Washington and published as Chapter 51-50 WAC, including any subsequent amendments or editions adopted by the state, is hereby adopted by reference" (Chapter 51-50 WAC).
  • 2021 International Residential Code — FMC § 15.04.030, as amended by Washington and published as Chapter 51-51 WAC.
  • 2021 Uniform Plumbing Code — FMC § 15.04.070: "The 2021 Uniform Plumbing Code, published by the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials, as amended by the state of Washington and published as Chapters 51-56 and 51-57 WAC, including any subsequent amendments or editions adopted by the state, is hereby adopted by reference."
  • 2021 International Mechanical Code — adopted under Chapter 51-52 WAC.
  • International Fire Code — adopted under Chapter 51-54 WAC.
  • 2021 Washington State Energy Code — FMC § 15.04.110: "The 2021 Washington State Energy Code, adopted by the Washington State Building Code Council and published as Chapters 51-11C and 51-11R WAC, including any subsequent amendments or editions thereto, is hereby adopted by reference."
  • 2017 ICC/ANSI A117.1 (accessibility) — adopted alongside the building code.
  • RCW 19.27 — the Washington State Building Code beneath all of the above.

Permit types & fees

Ferndale's permit history isn't searchable here yet

This page covers what the permit requires. What we don't have for Ferndale yet is the record of permits actually issued — the history you'd search by street address. That is a gap in our coverage, not a statement about any particular property.

Your email, and the place — never an address. We only use it to tell you when Ferndale lands. Privacy.

New residential construction activity

New privately-owned residential construction only

Housing units authorized by building permits for new privately-owned residential construction — this is not total permit volume (no commercial permits or remodels).

Tips & gotchas

  • FERNDALE'S CODE ADOPTION IS ROLLING. "Including any subsequent amendments or editions adopted by the state" means the governing edition changes when Washington changes it.
  • What applies is the WASHINGTON-amended edition of each code, published as a WAC chapter — not the International text as published.
  • The Swimming Pool and Spa Code and ICC/ANSI A117.1 are bundled into the building code adoption, not adopted separately.
  • Fee amounts are not in Chapter 15.04 — it says permit fees are as contained in the City's most current approved Fee Code. There is also a separate valuation schedule at FMC 15.12.
  • Contractor registration is a Washington state record, not a Ferndale licence.
