  • No sign may be erected, replaced, reconstructed, maintained, enlarged, or moved to a new location without a permit from the Building Inspector, reviewed and approved by the Zoning Administrator; applications must include a scaled plot plan showing the sign's size and location on the premises (City Code § 10-16-3.A)

    • Some sign types are exempt from the whole chapter, not just from a fee: temporary/personal/nonbusiness event signs (garage sale signs, open house signs, lost-and-found notices) are exempt under § 10-16-3.I, and political signs are exempt from the permit requirement (though not from the separate rules in § 10-16-10).
    • Billboards and off-premises advertising signs are flatly not permitted anywhere within Fruit Heights city limits (§ 10-16-2, § 10-16-6.A.10) — don't plan around one.
    • Animated, flashing, chaser-light, or sound-emitting signs are prohibited citywide, as are roof signs and signs placed over other signs (§ 10-16-6.A); commercial signs may still be approved with time/temperature or electronic message center capability.
    • There must be at least 10 feet of clearance between any pedestrian walkway or vehicle accessway and any part of a projecting or freestanding sign (§ 10-16-3.D), and no sign may be placed on publicly owned land, street rights-of-way, utility poles, or similar public fixtures except official/safety signage (§ 10-16-3.E).
