When you need this permit
- Electrical permit required for service upgrades/replacements, panel work, and other hard-wired electrical installations, subject to minor exemptions under § 15.60.020 (e.g., lamp replacement, portable equipment, low-voltage/25V-or-less wiring)
- Governed by the 2020 NEC as adopted by the Town, with extensive local amendments (§ 15.15.020): aluminum conductors are prohibited Town-wide; recessed service entries are NOT permitted — service disconnecting means and risers must be surface-mounted outside the structure; one-family dwelling service disconnecting means must be rated not less than 200 amperes, 3-wire (exception: existing structures)
- All accessory structures with a poured foundation require a concrete-encased electrode (NEC § 250.52(A)(3))
- Subpanels and low-voltage boxes may not be located in a firewall, fire barrier, fire partition, or the garage-side of a wall separating a dwelling from a garage/carport
- Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms must originate from a general-purpose branch circuit, not a dedicated circuit

Tips
- Huachuca City's aluminum-conductor ban is Town-wide and unusually absolute — all references to aluminum conductors are deleted from both the adopted IRC electrical chapters (E3406.3 and others) and the NEC amendments; this is stricter than most surrounding AZ jurisdictions.
- As of July 2026, no permit-specific plan review turnaround time for electrical permits was found published by the Town — a confirmed gap after exhaustive search (see residential-building-permit tips). Call 520-456-1354 for a current estimate.
