Sign Permit in Colorado City, Arizona
Required for most permanent and many temporary commercial/business sign types in Colorado City under the Town's Zoning Code (Town Code Chapter 152, Ord. 2020-02, passed 4-13-2020), specifically § 152.058 (Signage -- substantive standards) and § 152.094 (Sign Permit, Comprehensive Sign Plan and Master Sign Program -- application procedure). This is a distinct, separately adopted Zoning Code permit administered by the Zoning Administrator/Community Development Department, independent of the older 2006-2008-vintage Chapter 150 Building Code permits documented elsewhere in this file.

When you need this permit
- A sign permit is required to erect, re-erect, construct, alter or move most sign types identified in Table 4.4 of § 152.058; a separate permit is required for each sign or group of signs on a single supporting structure (§ 152.058(K))
- An electrical permit is additionally required for all electric/illuminated signs, reviewed under the Town's adopted electrical code, with the Zoning Administrator forwarding wiring/connection plans to the Building Official (§ 152.058(K) intro, § 152.094(B)(2))
- The sign contractor must be an Arizona ROC-licensed sign contractor; the application must include the contractor's name, address, contact information and ROC number (§ 152.058(K)(3)(b)) Contractor
- A comprehensive sign plan is mandatory (not optional) for any site developed as a complex or center with more than three tenants or structures (§ 152.058(F)(1)(f), § 152.058(K)(2)); once approved, individual tenant sign permits are issued only for signs matching the approved plan
- A master sign program (for developments/parcels of at least ten gross acres) may modify the standard sign regulations and requires Planning & Zoning Commission review plus Town Council action (§ 152.058(K)(1), § 152.094(C))
- Total aggregate sign area for a business is generally capped at the greater of 50 sq ft or 1.5 sq ft per lineal foot of building frontage, not to exceed 300 sq ft per business, with additional standards by sign type in § 152.058(H)-(J) (Table 4.4)
- Certain small or temporary signs are exempt from a sign permit -- e.g., temporary yard signs of 6 sq ft or less, window decorations/painting, weekend directional signs, and signs listed in § 152.058(C) -- but still subject to applicable placement/size limits
- Standard sign permits and comprehensive sign plans require no published, mailed, or posted public notice (Table 6.2-1 in § 152.086(E)) -- review is administrative, by the Zoning Administrator, unlike a Master Sign Program which does require public notice/hearing
- Political signs are governed separately by state law (A.R.S. § 16-1019), not this chapter (§ 152.058(J)(6))

Inspection process
- 1
Electrical Inspection (illuminated signs only)
Electric/illuminated signs require a companion electrical permit subject to the Town's standard electrical inspection under the adopted National Electrical Code (Town Code § 150.05). Neither § 152.058 nor § 152.094 describes a separate physical inspection step for non-illuminated signs beyond code-enforcement action against damaged or unsafe signs (§ 152.058(F)(5)(e)).

Tips
- Chapter 152 (Zoning Code, Ord. 2020-02, passed 4-13-2020) is a comparatively recent, detailed sign ordinance layered on top of the much older 2006-2008-vintage Chapter 150 Building/Electrical Code adoption documented elsewhere in this file -- signage in Colorado City is regulated separately from, and in more procedural detail than, the Town's other permit categories.
- The Town's general 'Land Use Application' (tocc.us/applications) does not list a 'Sign Permit' checkbox among its options (Abandonment/Reversion, Conditional Use Permit, Lot Line Adjustment, Rezoning, Sketch Plan, Special Use Permit, Subdivision Plats, Variance, Zoning Map Change, General Plan Amendment, Land Use Verification/Other, Development Review) -- confirm the correct current sign-permit intake process directly with Community Development.
- A comprehensive sign plan is required (not merely available) once a site has more than three tenants/structures -- this is a mandatory trigger, not an optional upgrade path.
- Sign contractors must hold an Arizona Registrar of Contractors (ROC) license; the ROC number is a required field on the sign permit application. Contractor
