When you need this permit
- No sign shall be erected, mounted, displayed, remodeled, reconstructed, maintained, or moved without first securing a permit from the City, per Sec. 11-4-10(d)(1)
- Application obtained from and submitted to the Building Department, per Sec. 11-4-10(d)(2)(A)
- Sign permit fees are based on the building permit fees in the International Building Code in place at the time of application; sign valuation is determined using the Colorado State Tax Commission Manual in effect at application time, per Sec. 11-4-10(d)(2)(B)
- All electrical work on a sign must be performed by a Colorado-licensed electrician under a separate valid City electrical permit — no electrical work may be performed without one, per Sec. 11-4-10(b)(3) Contractor
- Certain small/unobtrusive signs are exempt from a permit (e.g., building directory signs up to 15 sq ft, certain directional signs, flags meeting specified limits, small balloon groupings) but remain subject to all other applicable code provisions
- A denied applicant is contacted within three days to explain the reason; if no agreement is reached, a written notice of denial is prepared within 10 days of the decision, describing appeal rights
- Denials may be appealed to the Board of Adjustment per Sec. 11-6-7(d)

Tips
- The Director's 7-day clock only starts once the application is COMPLETE — an incomplete submittal doesn't start the countdown, so submit a fully documented application to get the fastest turnaround.
- Sign permit fees piggyback on the IBC building-permit fee table applied to the sign's valuation (per the Colorado State Tax Commission Manual) rather than a flat sign-specific fee — get your contractor's sign valuation figure ready before applying.
