Sign Permit in Wickenburg, Arizona

Required for essentially every sign erected, painted, or otherwise installed in the Town of Wickenburg. The requirement is set by the Town's adopted Zoning Ordinance, Chapter 14 of the Town Code, Article 14-18 (Sign Regulations), Section 14-18-16 ('Permits, Approval and Registration Required'), which states that 'A Sign Permit and Business Permit is required for all signs, unless specifically excepted, which are intended to be erected, painted or otherwise installed in the Town.' Sign Permits are administered by the Zoning Administrator (Community Development & Neighborhood Services Department) on forms the Zoning Administrator provides, and the Town's adopted Consolidated Fee Schedule carries a dedicated Comm. Dvlp./Planning line item for a Permanent Sign. Article 14-18 separately creates a Temporary Sign Permit track for A-frame signs, banner signs, special-event signs, and development 'Coming Soon' signs.

When you need this permit

  • Zoning Ordinance § 14-18-16(C)(1): a Sign Permit and Business Permit is required for all signs, unless specifically excepted, which are intended to be erected, painted or otherwise installed in the Town, and for changes to existing legal nonconforming signs that decrease the sign area under § 14-18-17(A)(3) (as amended by Ord. 1154)
  • Sign Permits are NOT required for minor repairs or for repainting of any permitted sign (§ 14-18-16(C)(1))
  • Application is made on forms provided by the Zoning Administrator; the Zoning Administrator examines applications 'within a reasonable time after filing' and will not issue the permit while any applicable violation of Article 14-18 or another Town Code provision by the applicant's existing signs or uses remains uncorrected (§ 14-18-16(A))
  • Submittal contents, in addition to information required under the Town's Building Code (§ 14-18-16(C)(2)): a site plan showing the sign's location relative to nearby buildings, structures, rights-of-way, easements and driveways; a scaled drawing showing sign dimensions, sign copy, all materials, and the method of construction and attachment to the building; the name of the person, firm or corporation erecting the sign and all attendant structures; the written consent of the owner of the building, structure or premises; and, for a decrease in the area of an existing legal nonconforming sign, a photograph and dimensions of the existing sign
  • Permit validity: if the work authorized by a Sign Permit has not been completed within six (6) months after issuance, the permit becomes null and void (§ 14-18-16(E)(1))
  • Rights under a Sign Permit are revocable licenses; the Zoning Administrator may revoke a permit if the sign is constructed or maintained in violation of Article 14-18 or of the permit itself (§§ 14-18-16(E)(2), 14-18-18)
  • Temporary Sign Permit track: temporary A-frame signs, temporary banner signs, special-event signs (a Sign Permit is required except for window signs or posters), Special Attention Getting Devices (a Sign Permit authorizing their use must be issued before installation), and development 'Coming Soon' signs are permitted only with a Temporary Sign Permit; temporary signs for real estate, construction and subdivisions do not require a Sign Permit
  • Planned Shopping Center Zoning District: § 14-18-9(A) requires an approved framework prior to issuance of Sign Permits for any business or occupancy in that district
  • Any sign, whether or not a permit is required, may contain a non-commercial message (§ 14-18-16(B)); appeals of a Zoning Administrator sign decision go to the Board of Adjustment
  • Submitted digitally through the Town's iworq online portal per the Town's paperless policy; the Town does not accept paper plans

Fee schedule

Permanent SignTown of Wickenburg 2026-27 Consolidated Fee Schedule, effective June 17, 2026 (29 pages), page 2 of 29, Comm. Dvlp./Planning section: 'Permanent Sign | $75.00 | Per submittal'. READ FROM A 200-DPI RENDER of page 2 (pdftoppm), not from text extraction, and page 3 (the remainder of the Comm. Dvlp./Planning section) was rendered and read as well to confirm no second sign table follows. Fetched live from wickenburgaz.gov/DocumentCenter/View/10370/2025-26-Consolidated-Fee-Schedule (HTTP 200, not Wayback) on 2026-08-16; note the document's own title says 2026-27 even though the URL slug says 2025-26.
$75.00 per submittal
Temporary Sign PermitVERIFIED NEGATIVE, not an unsearched gap. Article 14-18 repeatedly requires a 'Temporary Sign Permit' (A-frame signs, banner signs, special-event signs, Special Attention Getting Devices, development 'Coming Soon' signs), but the Town's adopted Consolidated Fee Schedule carries exactly one sign line item — 'Permanent Sign' — across the entire Comm. Dvlp./Planning section. Established by rendering and visually reading all four pages of that section (pages 1-4 of 29, which is where the whole Comm. Dvlp. block begins and ends) plus a full-text scan of all 29 pages. No temporary-sign, banner, or special-event sign fee exists in the schedule. Contact Community Development (928-684-5451 ext. 1512) for the temporary-sign charge.
No published fee
Plan Review Fee (where a building-code review applies)§ 14-18-16(C)(2) requires sign applications to include the information required under the Town's Building Code in addition to the zoning submittal items, so structural/electrical sign work can draw the Town's standard plan-review charge. Town of Wickenburg 2026-27 Consolidated Fee Schedule, page 3 of 29, Comm. Dvlp./Planning, 'Plan Review Fee | 65% of Building Permit Fee' (read from a 200-dpi render 2026-08-16). Whether this is applied to a sign-only submittal was NOT confirmed by any Town document and should be checked with Community Development.

Tips

  • The Town Code requires BOTH a Sign Permit and a Business Permit for signs under § 14-18-16(C)(1) — budget for the business-licensing side of the file, not just the sign itself.
  • Existing violations block issuance. § 14-18-16(A) directs the Zoning Administrator not to issue the Sign Permit while any sign or use in the applicant's ownership and control that is 'directly related to the application' violates Article 14-18 or any other Town Code provision — clean up existing signage before applying.
  • Written consent of the property/building owner is a required submittal item, not an optional courtesy (§ 14-18-16(C)(2)(d)).
  • Reducing the area of a legal nonconforming sign still requires a permit (§§ 14-18-16(C)(1) and 14-18-17(A)(3), added by Ord. 1154, adopted 9-21-2015) — and requires a photograph plus dimensions of the existing sign.
  • A permit that sits unused expires: work must be COMPLETED within six months of issuance, not merely started (§ 14-18-16(E)(1)).
  • Supersession watch: the Town's own Municipal Code Online platform displays Chapter 14 (Zoning) as a stub reading 'The Zoning Code of the Town of Wickenburg is currently being revised' with a link to the current Zoning Code PDF, and the Town's site hosts a 'Wickenburg ZO Clean draft Jan 2026' and a redline dated March 2026. Those drafts are NOT adopted law and were not used here — every figure above comes from the currently-served Zoning Ordinance (Ord. 1221 update, adopted 11/1/2021) — but Article 14-18 could change when the rewrite is adopted.

Frequently asked questions

Almost certainly. Zoning Ordinance § 14-18-16(C)(1) requires a Sign Permit and a Business Permit for all signs, unless specifically excepted, that are intended to be erected, painted or otherwise installed in the Town. The main exception is minor repairs or repainting of an already-permitted sign, which need no Sign Permit.

The Town's adopted 2026-27 Consolidated Fee Schedule (effective June 17, 2026) lists a Permanent Sign fee of $75.00 per submittal under Comm. Dvlp./Planning. There is no published fee for the Temporary Sign Permit track (A-frame, banner, special-event, and 'Coming Soon' signs) — that is a confirmed absence from the adopted schedule, so call Community Development at 928-684-5451 ext. 1512 for the temporary-sign charge.

Wickenburg does not publish a plan-review timeline for this permit. Contact Town of Wickenburg Community Development & Neighborhood Services Department — Building Safety Division at 928-684-5451 ext. 1512 for current turnaround.

You'll need: Sign Permit Application; Site Plan; Scaled Sign Drawing; Written Owner Consent. Depending on your project, Wickenburg may also ask for: Photograph and Dimensions of Existing Sign. See the required-documents checklist on this page for details on each.

Wickenburg, Arizona has adopted: Arizona has NO statewide mandatory building code floor for general construction — code adoption is a per-city/county authority under state enabling statutes (e.g., A.R.S. Title 9 for municipalities). The Town of Wickenburg independently adopts and administers its own construction codes through its Community Development & Neighborhood Services Department; it does not defer building permitting to Maricopa County or Yavapai County (the town spans parts of both counties). Septic systems, however, are NOT permitted by the Town — they are permitted by the applicable county's Environmental Services division (Maricopa County Environmental Services or Yavapai County Environmental Services, depending on parcel location).
