Fence, Wall, and Retaining Wall Permit in City of Maricopa, Arizona
Fences and walls in Maricopa are regulated under a two-track system: a Zoning Permit for fences/walls under 7 feet (verifying location and design), and a full Commercial Wall/Fence Permit or Commercial Retaining Wall Permit for taller structures and retaining walls over 4 feet. Governed by the City's Fence and Wall Guide (Rev. 10/2024).

Tips
- Per the City's Plan Review Turnaround Times document, 'Zoning Permit' (Planning & Zoning review times section) averages 8 working days first review / 4 subsequent, 10-day administrative completeness, 16-day substantive review, for a 26-working-day overall review time (2 review cycles). A Commercial Wall/Fence permit requiring a full building permit instead falls under the 'Miscellaneous' Building Safety category at 30 working days overall.
- Even fences under 7 feet that don't need a building permit still require a Zoning Permit — the two review tracks are not interchangeable.
- Retaining wall height for a combined fence-on-wall structure is measured from the ground level on the lowest side; if the freestanding portion is set back a distance equal to or greater than its own height, the two portions are measured/calculated separately.
