Tips

  • Plumbing and Electrical inspections are done through the STATE, not the County -- per the County's own Building Department page, framing/masonry inspection cannot proceed until plumbing and electrical rough inspections (conducted by the state DPO inspector) have already been approved, so schedule your state trade inspections early enough not to block the County's own inspection sequence.
  • It is up to the permit holder to notify the Building Inspector of any inspections, with a minimum of 24 hours' notice; inspections are done in the order requests are received.
  • The Use Tax Deposit (2% of materials valuation) is due AT permit issuance, not at project completion -- choose your payment method (Itemized Cost Breakdown, County Valuation Data, or Affidavit of Local Purchase) up front, since each carries different documentation and reconciliation obligations.
  • Mobile/Manufactured Home installations need a separate State MHIP permit in addition to this County Building Permit -- Conejos County is the state's authorized local MHIP agent for the whole county, including inside the incorporated towns.

CURRENT CONTACT VERIFIED DIRECTLY against the County's own live /building-department page: Matt Beckner is the current Building Department Director/Building Official. Note: the Colorado DFPC's Prequalified Building Departments list (a statewide roster, rendered to PNG and read visually because pdftotext -layout badly garbled its two-column table) still shows 'Chris DeHerrera' as the county's certified contact, with an expiration date of 7/24/2023 printed on that same stale roster -- this is a confirmed-stale third-party listing, not the current authority; Matt Beckner is used throughout this file as the verified current Building Official per the County's own site.. 2018 International Building Code (IBC), 2018 International Residential Code (IRC), and 2018 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), effective July 1, 2023, per the County's own Building Department page.

No. Conejos County is not on the Colorado DORA Division of Professions and Occupations' list of locally-certified counties for either Electrical or Plumbing inspection -- those permits and inspections are issued directly by the State (dpo.colorado.gov/EandP/Permits), confirmed independently by the County's own Building Department page ('Plumbing & Electrical inspections are done through the state').

Legally, the County's own jurisdiction covers only unincorporated land, and the towns are separate municipalities. In practice, as of this verification none of the five towns operates an active, separately staffed building department: La Jara's building/zoning page has been offline since sometime between January 2023 and June 2024; Antonito has no official town government website; Manassa's and Sanford's official sites list full department menus with no building function; Romeo has no locatable functioning website. The Colorado DFPC's statewide prequalified-department roster also lists only 'Conejos County,' not any of the five towns.
