When you need this permit
- Plans/work must comply with the 2009 IRC as locally adopted and amended, including Akron's Table R301.2(1) design criteria: 20 psf ground snow load, 90 mph wind speed (no topographic effects), Seismic Design Category C, 30-inch minimum frost line depth, Slight-to-Moderate termite exposure, 0 F winter design temperature, no ice shield underlayment required, Air Freezing Index 0-1000, Mean Annual Temp 47 F
- Automatic residential fire sprinkler systems are NOT required for one- and two-family dwellings under Akron's local amendment to Section R313.2 (deleted); this requirement applies only to townhouses (Section R313.1, effective 2-3-2014)
- Permit becomes invalid if work is not commenced within 180 days of issuance, or if suspended/abandoned for 180 days; standard permit validity is 12 months from issuance, extendable in limited circumstances (see localAmendments)
- Fees are paid to the Town Clerk and deposited in the Town's General Fund per Town Code 10-1-1; building fees and use taxes are calculated based on construction cost and are due at the time the application is submitted (per the Town's live Building Department page) — there is no separate fixed dollar fee schedule to look up
- A Certificate of Occupancy (CO) must be obtained before any building can be occupied (Town's live Building Department page, corroborated by Wayback snapshots of the same page dated 2020-08-13 and 2021-10-06)
- All building permits require a plot plan showing placement of the structure, grades, elevations, sidewalks, curb and gutters, and other pertinent information (per the current application form and the live Building Department page)
- If the work involves roofing, shingles must carry a National Wind Warranty of 89 mph sustained or 115 mph 3-second gust per the current application form; separately, the Town's live Building Department page states roofing must meet Ground Snow 20 / Roof Snow 30 loading, a minimum 110 mph wind shingle rating, and that ice-and-water-guard and drip-edge underlayment are NOT required by the Town (check with your insurer, as their requirements may differ) — both figures are cited as stated by their respective sources and have not been reconciled into a single number

Tips
- Akron's Table R301.2(1) design criteria (20 psf ground snow load, 90 mph wind speed, Seismic Design Category C, 30-inch frost depth) are set locally and differ materially from mountain-jurisdiction values elsewhere in this corpus — confirm your design professional is using Akron's specific figures, not a generic Colorado Front Range or mountain-town assumption.
- The Town's adopted IRC edition (2009) is notably older than its adopted IBC edition (2018) — if your project spans both codes (e.g., a mixed-use or ambiguous-occupancy structure), confirm with the Building Inspector which edition/chapter governs.
- The Town's website migrated from townofakron.colorado.gov to www.townofakron.com — old bookmarked colorado.gov links now redirect to the new homepage, but the Building Department page and current application PDF are live at townofakron.com/179/Building and townofakron.com/DocumentCenter/View/201 respectively (confirmed 2026-07-13); call Town Hall (970-345-2624, Monday-Thursday 7:30 AM-5:30 PM) to confirm project-specific fees, which are calculated from construction cost rather than published as a table.
