When you need this permit
- Uncovered decks: site plan, house-attachment cross-section detail (ledger fastener spacing per Table R507.9.1.3(2)), guardrail/stair/handrail detail (guardrail required where deck floor exceeds 30 inches above grade), footing detail, and a cross-section deck plan showing footing/column/beam/joist dimensions
- Patio covers/carports: site plan, house-and-post attachment detail, footing detail, pergola information (if applicable), and a cross-section patio-cover plan; patio covers are limited to 12 feet in height maximum
- Carports within 5 feet of a property line must have that side enclosed with a solid 1-hour fire-rated wall, but at least 2 sides of a carport must remain open per Building Code; Zoning Approval is required for this scenario
- All lumber in contact with ground/concrete must be treated or rated for that use; all screws/nails hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel
- Pergolas are typically not required to be designed for roof/snow load transfer (no permit required in some jurisdictions) — applicant must check with Platteville specifically on whether a permit is required for pergola-type structures

Tips
- Decks 30 inches or more above finished grade require a guardrail at 36 inches; handrails are required on stairs with 4 or more risers, installed 34-38 inches above the stair nosing.
- If your patio cover or carport will sit within 5 feet of a property line, budget for a 1-hour fire-rated wall on that side — but remember at least 2 sides of a carport must stay open to satisfy the Building Code, and Zoning Approval is required in this scenario.
- Pergolas may or may not need a permit in Platteville specifically — the SAFEbuilt guide says to check with your local municipality, so don't assume the general 'pergolas don't need engineering' guidance means no permit at all.
