    Tips

    • A permanent wall, roof, or projecting sign may need a City Building Permit in addition to the $40 Sign Permit — confirm with the Community Development Department, (406) 446-1606 ext. 118, before installing.
    • Neon signs are restricted to the Downtown Historic Overlay District and must meet historic design criteria (traditional materials, complex non-rectangular shapes, exposed neon/incandescent lighting, max 22 sq ft) reviewed through Design Review, not the standard Zoning Administrator sign review.
    • Several common small signs need no permit at all: a projecting sign ≤2.5 sq ft, one real estate sign ≤6 sq ft per lot, minor building-ID signs ≤4 sq ft, and indoor/window displays — see RLZR §4.6.40 for the full exemption list.
    • Temporary signs for non-commercial special events/short-term activities are capped at 30 days and 16 sq ft (96 sq ft for street-spanning banners); private-business sales promotions do not qualify for this temporary-sign allowance.
