Sign Permit in Elko, Nevada
Required for erection of most signs within Elko city limits, governed by Elko Municipal Code Title 3, Chapter 9 (Sign Regulations), which adopts the International Building Code, Appendix H ('Signs') per Section 3-9-2, with Chapter 9's own provisions controlling in the event of a conflict. Administration and enforcement is the joint responsibility of the City Building and Planning Departments (Section 3-9-13). When you need this permit
- A sign permit is required for signs erected in the city, except those specifically exempted under Elko Municipal Code Section 3-9-6: construction signs (≤48 sq ft, erected no more than 60 days before construction and removed within 30 days of completion/before occupancy); government traffic-control, public-facility-directional, or regulatory-notice signs; real estate signs (≤32 sq ft, unilluminated, set back at least 10 feet from all property lines, removed within 7 days of sale/rental/lease); special-event (election) signs per Nevada Revised Statutes; and political signs located/removed per Nevada Revised Statutes

- In commercial or industrial zoning districts, each lot or parcel of record is limited to one freestanding sign per street frontage (Section 3-9-7(A)(1)), except a gasoline service station may have one additional trade-name or pricing sign if the premises has only one street frontage, and an automotive dealership may have one sign for each new-car dealership; frontage along a freeway or interstate highway does not count as street frontage
- Freestanding sign height is capped at 25 feet on streets with a 25 mph or lower speed limit, 35 feet on streets with a speed limit greater than 25 mph, and 45 feet within 100 feet of the Interstate Route 80 right-of-way (Section 3-9-7(B))
- Freestanding sign area is capped at 2 square feet of sign area per linear foot of building frontage facing the adjacent street (or 1 square foot per linear foot of property frontage for signs proposed on vacant, undeveloped land) (Section 3-9-7(C))
- Freestanding signs are not permitted in residential zoning districts, except exempted signs or signs authorized as part of a conditional use permit for a medical office, professional office, multi-family residential, or similar conditional use (Section 3-9-7(D))
- Directional/instructional signs that do not advertise a business (restrooms, public telephones, walkways, parking lot entrance/exit) are limited to one sign per driveway approach and 6 square feet in area (Section 3-9-7(A)(2)); off-premises signs must maintain a minimum 600-foot separation distance (Section 3-9-7(A)(3))

Municipal Code Chapter 9 (Sign Regulations) sets no review-duration clock, the Building Department FAQ's only stated turnaround (6-8 weeks first review) is explicitly scoped to 'Residential Permits for new construction,' and the Building Department main page and Building Forms page publish no sign-specific turnaround. Elko Municipal Code Section 2-1-5(N) sets only a post-approval, 10-day permit-issuance clock, not a plan-review duration.
