When you need this permit
- It is illegal to erect or maintain any sign or outdoor advertising structure without first obtaining City approval, evidenced by a permit from the Community Development Director, Zoning Administrator, or designee — except temporary nonelectrical wall signs under 6 square feet, which need no approval (City Code § 20.4)
- Movable A-frame signs displaying a menu or special message require a permit, are capped at the ordinance's stated size of 30" x 36" (the ordinance's own text elsewhere restates this as '30" x 48"' — both figures appear verbatim in § 20.4, so confirm the current dimension with Community Development), must be stored inside during closed hours, and must stay within 3 feet of the storefront
- Roof signs require a permit and Community Development Director/Zoning Administrator approval of a design that hides all supporting members; roof sign area counts against the wall's total allowed wall-sign area
- Banner signs are permitted only under specific time limits: 60 consecutive days for a temporary promotion (once per business location), up to 6 months (plus one 6-month Planning Commission extension) for a new business without permanent signage, 60 days for a bankruptcy/going-out-of-business promotion, or 30 days per quarter for other sales/events (§ 20.4)
- Off-premises billboard signs and off-premises outdoor advertising structures are not permitted anywhere in Grantsville (traffic/directional signs excepted) (§ 20.4)

Tips
- Sign types allowed differ sharply by zone under the ordinance's Land Use Sign Tables: agricultural/rural residential zones (Table 1) permit A-frame, appurtenant, banner, entry feature, freestanding, monument, and reader board signs, but not wall or animated signs; single-family residential zones (Table 2) are far more restrictive (largely entry feature and public information signs only, with multi-family zones adding wall/banner/monument); commercial and manufacturing zones (Table 3) permit nearly every sign type including electronic message centers, and only manufacturing/mining zones permit billboards.
- Monument signs are capped at 6 feet in height (up to 20 feet if multi-tenant, 2+ businesses per sign), one per 200 feet of frontage; wall signs are capped at 20% of the wall's total square footage and may not project more than 18 inches from the building face; freestanding signs are capped at 20 feet in height, one per 200 feet of frontage, and must be within 5 feet of the public right-of-way with clad (not exposed pole) support structures (§ 20.8).
- Electronic message centers (EMCs) must follow Dark Sky International-aligned rules: dimming to no more than 0.3 footcandle over ambient light measured from 100 feet away, no flashing/animation, and a minimum 8-second dwell time per message (§ 20.4).
- Freestanding or projecting signs are barred from the sight triangle at intersections (30 feet back from the intersection, 8 feet above curb grade) and must maintain at least 10 feet of clearance over public/private walkways (§ 20.7).
- The chapter's own text is internally inconsistent about the A-frame sign size cap — it states both 'thirty inches by thirty six inches' and, in the same paragraph, '(30" x 48")' — verify the current maximum with Community Development before fabricating a sign to that spec.
