When you need this permit

  • A sign permit is required before placing, displaying, altering, or relocating most signs (Zoning Code §1108.E.1), except signs exempted under §1108.B
  • Permits are NOT required for: any sign not exceeding 6 sq ft in area; temporary signs not exceeding 32 sq ft specifically permitted by Section 1107 (e.g., real estate, contractor, development, political signs within their own size/height/setback limits); standard sign maintenance; relocation required by the City; and window signs (Zoning Code §1108.B.2)
  • Zoning-district sign allowances (Zoning Code §1106): AG and R-1/R-2 districts -- 1 non-illuminated sign per lot, max 6 sq ft/6 ft height; R-3 through R-6 -- 2 signs per parcel, max 32 sq ft/8 ft height (R-6 developments guaranteed at least 24 sq ft); C-1/C-2/C-3/C-O/C-P/I-1/I-2/I-3 -- attached signage up to 2 sq ft per front foot of occupancy (160 sq ft cap per occupancy, min. 24 sq ft guaranteed) and detached signage up to 1 sq ft per lineal foot of street frontage and 1 ft of height per 10 ft of frontage, capped at 80 sq ft / 12 ft height
  • Pole signs are a prohibited sign type citywide (Zoning Code §1108.C.1.m); roof signs are permitted in commercial/industrial districts only up to 30% of building height and may not project above the roofline (§1108.D.9)

  • A sign permit expires (becomes null and void) if work is not commenced within 180 days of issuance, or if suspended/abandoned for 120 or more days after commencing -- a shorter suspension threshold than the City's general 180-day building-permit rule (Zoning Code §1108.E.4)

Tips

  • As of July 2026, the City of Coolidge does not appear to publish a permit-specific plan review turnaround time for sign permits on its public website, Zoning Code, or fee schedule. There is no verifiable online source for this -- call the Development Services Department at 520-723-6075.
  • Small signs (6 sq ft or less) and many temporary signs (real estate, contractor, development, political -- each within their own Section 1107 size/height/duration limits) do not require a sign permit at all, but are still subject to the Zoning Code's placement and prohibition rules.
  • Pole signs are prohibited citywide regardless of permit status (Zoning Code §1108.C.1.m) -- detached signage must use a monument-style base per §1108.E.1.b.
  • An illuminated sign needs two permits in practice: the Sign Permit itself (Article 10 fee: 3% of valuation + $0.30/sq ft) and a companion Electrical Permit (Article 4: $22 issuance + $22 for the first branch circuit, $4.25 each additional circuit).
  • The sign-permit-specific expiration rule (180 days to commence work, 120 days maximum suspension) is shorter/different from the citywide building-permit expiration rule elsewhere in this file (180 days to commence, 180 days suspension, 24-month final-inspection cap) -- confirm which rule applies to a mixed-scope project with Development Services.
