When you need this permit
- Reviewed under the 2006 IRC as adopted; per Section R102.7.1, additions/alterations/repairs must conform to the requirements for a new structure without requiring the whole existing structure to comply, and must not cause the structure to become unsafe or adversely affect performance
- Building Permit Application with the 'Addition,' 'Alteration,' or 'Repair' box checked, per the Town's combined application form
- Ordinary repairs (replacement of lamps, connection of approved portable electrical equipment to approved permanently installed receptacles) do NOT require a permit, per Section R105.2.2 — but this exemption explicitly excludes cutting/removal of any wall, partition, structural beam, or load-bearing support, changes to required egress, or any addition/alteration/replacement/relocation of water supply, sewer, drainage, gas, soil, waste, vent, or similar piping, electric wiring, or mechanical work affecting public health or safety
- Emergency repairs: where equipment replacements/repairs must be performed in an emergency, the permit application must be submitted within the next working business day (Section R105.2.1)
- State rough electrical and plumbing inspections apply if the scope involves those systems
