Sign Permit (Permanent and Temporary) in Edgewater, Colorado
Required to erect, move, alter, reconstruct or repair any permanent or temporary sign in Edgewater, except signs specifically exempted under Edgewater Municipal Code Sec. 16-19-50(a). Governed by Chapter 16 (Zoning Code), Article 19 (Sign Code). The sign permit itself is reviewed and issued by the City Manager's office (not SAFEbuilt), but a separate City building and/or electrical permit is still required, through the normal CommunityCore/SAFEbuilt process, for the physical construction or electrical work of erecting the sign.

When you need this permit
- A sign permit is required before commencement of work on any permanent or temporary sign; the City will not accept or act on a sign permit application unless the applicant first provides written evidence of a current City of Edgewater business license, per Sec. 16-19-20(a)
- Application must include: street address of the proposed sign, names/addresses of owner/sign contractor/erector, a legible site plan showing sign location, scaled drawings (minimum 1 inch = 10 feet) with dimensions/specifications/colors/materials/illumination/mounting method, a description of any lighting, and — for freestanding or projecting signs — a structural engineer's certification may be required by City staff (Sec. 16-19-20(b))
- Proof of public liability insurance is required for projecting wall signs; a written lease or property-owner permission is required if the sign will be located off the sign permit holder's own premises
- Upon sign permit approval, the applicant may then apply for any building or electrical permits required for the sign; no sign shall be erected or displayed prior to sign permit approval (Sec. 16-19-20(c))
- Commercial signs on Sheridan Boulevard or on West 20th Avenue between Sheridan Boulevard and Ingalls Street are limited to specific sign types with dimensional caps set out in Sec. 16-19-80, including awning signs (max 50 sq ft), digital electronic message signs (monument-type only, max 80 sq ft total, allowed only along Sheridan Boulevard), address signs (no permit required, max 2 per use), monument signs (up to 300 sq ft with sufficient setback), portable signs (prohibited on Sheridan Boulevard), projecting signs, wall signs (area scaled to business frontage), window signs (max 35% of window/door area), and temporary banner signs
- Temporary sign permits are valid for 45 days from approval (except temporary portable sign permits, which may run any length of time); a maximum of 2 temporary sign permits may be issued per calendar year per business location, and total temporary sign area may not exceed 18 square feet (Sec. 16-19-30(d))
- A projecting sign that encroaches into the public right-of-way must obtain a Revocable Permit prior to installation, in addition to the sign permit
- Final approval of an erected sign is contingent on a City inspection within 14 days after erection; the applicant is responsible for requesting that final sign inspection (Sec. 16-19-20(d))
- Digital electronic message signs are prohibited in all zone districts except the C-1 District along Sheridan Boulevard; flashing, moving, blinking, chasing or other animation effects are prohibited on all signs except time/temperature signs and conforming digital message boards; roof signs are prohibited citywide

Tips
- The City will not even accept a sign permit application until the applicant shows written evidence of a current City of Edgewater business license (Sec. 16-19-20(a)) — get the business license squared away before submitting the sign permit application, not after.
- Sign permit approval is not the same as a construction permit: once the sign permit is approved, the applicant must separately apply for any building or electrical permit the sign work requires (billed under this file's residential-building-permit and electrical-permit fee schedules) before doing the physical installation.
- The detailed dimensional sign-type table in Sec. 16-19-80 (awning, digital message, monument, portable, projecting, wall, window signs) applies specifically to commercial signs on Sheridan Boulevard or on West 20th Avenue between Sheridan Boulevard and Ingalls Street — other commercial corridors and residential districts fall under different provisions of Article 19.
- Temporary sign permits are capped at 45 days of validity and a maximum of 2 permits per calendar year per business location (max 18 sq ft total) — plan seasonal/promotional signage around these limits; portable sign permits are the one exception that can run indefinitely.
