When you need this permit
- Building permit required for additions, remodels, and alteration/repair work regulated by the adopted Building Code
- For additions: the floor plan must show the addition and all existing rooms, doors, and windows adjoining it, with distances to property lines and existing structures documented on all sides, and existing sleeping-room egress must not be blocked
- For alteration/repair without structural changes: two sets of lists outlining the work to be performed and materials to be used may be accepted in lieu of full construction-document submittal
- Any work suspected of involving asbestos-containing materials requires a call to the Air Quality Control Bureau (1-800-224-7009) before commencing
- Same 35% lot coverage cap and 25 ft front / 10 ft side-rear setbacks apply to additions as to new construction
- Electrical, plumbing, and mechanical/HVAC permits for the addition/remodel must be obtained separately through the City of Rio Rancho Building Department

Tips
- Non-structural alteration/repair work can use a simplified two-list submittal (work description + materials) instead of full construction documents — ask the Building Official whether your project qualifies before preparing full plans.
- An addition cannot block an existing sleeping room's sole means of egress — verify this on your floor plan before submittal.
