Fire Sprinkler & Fire Alarm System Permit in Unincorporated Tooele County, Utah

Unincorporated Tooele County requires a fire sprinkler & fire alarm system permit for: New installation, alteration, or extension of a fire sprinkler system or fire alarm system on a property within the North Tooele Fire District (Erda, Lake Point, Pine Canyon, Stansbury Park, and surrounding unincorporated areas); Automatic fire sprinkler systems are mandatory in new one- and two-family dwellings and townhomes built or moved within NTFD boundaries if ANY of the following apply, per NTFD Ordinance No. 2015-001: (A) the structure is in an urban-wildland interface area and does not meet Utah Code 65A-8-203(3)(a) / Utah Administrative Code R652-122-200 minimum wildland fire standards; (B) the structure is in an area without a public water distribution system with fire hydrants per Utah Administrative Code R309-550-5; (C) the only fire apparatus access road has a grade greater than 10% for more than 500 continual feet; (D) the water supply does not provide at least 750 gallons per minute for 30 minutes where living space exceeds 5,000 but is at or under 10,000 square feet; or (E) the water supply does not provide at least 1,000 gallons per minute for 30 minutes where living space exceeds 10,000 square feet; Outside the NTFD boundary (i.e., directly under Tooele County Fire), automatic fire sprinkler systems are mandatory under Tooele County Code § 6-17-10 if ANY of the following apply: (A) the structure is in a wildland-urban interface area and does not meet Utah Code § 65A-8-203(4)(a) / Utah Administrative Code R652-122-1300 minimum wildland fire standards; (B) the area lacks a public water distribution system with fire hydrants per Utah Administrative Code R309-550-5; (C) the only fire apparatus access road has a grade greater than 10% for more than 500 continual feet; (D) the dwelling unit's total floor area exceeds 10,000 square feet; or (E) the dwelling unit's total floor area is double the average of unsprinklered homes (10,000 sq ft or under) in the same subdivision -- with a narrow exception for single-lot subdivisions outside the wildland-urban interface with 50 feet of defensible space on all sides; Fire sprinkler and fire alarm plan review and permitting is a separate process and fee from the Tooele County building permit -- coordinate both in parallel. Per NTFD's fee schedule (effective 1-01-2024): Fire Alarm Plan Review is $250.00 and the Fire Alarm Permit (including inspection) is $200.00.
