When you need this permit
- Building permit required for all new fences; a fence permit is NOT required to replace an existing fence, but any replacement must still meet current zoning laws
- No fence shall exceed six (6) feet in height, with exceptions per Zoning Ordinance Article V, Section 2, Paragraph 4
- No wall or fence shall be constructed or maintained over three (3) feet in height within the front-yard setbacks of each zone
- Any fence constructed outside the applicant's own property line, without proper approvals/permits, must be immediately removed at the owner's expense
- No more than one fence may be built on a given lot line
- Fences must be constructed with the finished side facing outward (toward neighboring properties/the street)
- A sketch plot plan showing the fence location and indicating materials/style must accompany the application
- Highland Meadows subdivision fence permits do not need to go through standard City review, due to that development's own design review process — bring a copy of the developer's design approval instead
- Final inspection must be requested from the City of Williams Building Department upon job completion

Tips
- At $37.95, the Fence Permit is the single clearest, fully-published flat fee found anywhere in the City of Williams permit inventory — most other permit types reference an unpublished Council-resolution fee schedule instead.
- Fence permits are classified among Ordinance No. 956's 'fixed fee permits,' valid for 1 year from issue per the application form itself (this specific form's 1-year figure is a more generous validity than the 180-day figure stated generally for fixed-fee permits in Ordinance No. 956 — the Fence Permit Application form's stated 1-year term is treated as the more specific, form-published figure for this permit type).
- Replacing an existing fence in the same location/height does NOT require a new fence permit, but must still comply with current zoning height/setback rules — confirm zoning compliance even for like-for-like fence replacement.
- Fences are simple, over-the-counter-style permits (no plan-review deposit, no multi-week review) — this is a fixed, published, low administrative burden compared to the 15-working-day building-permit-plan-review track.
