Building Permit (New / Addition / Alteration / Repair / Roof / Move / Remove) in Burley, Idaho
Required for new construction, additions, alterations, repairs, re-roofing, structure moves, and removals within Burley city limits. The City of Burley issues a single general Building Permit Application covering all these work types (checkbox selection for New, Addition, Alteration, Repair, Roof, Move, Remove); applications may be submitted on paper to the Building Department or through the City's iWorQ online citizen portal. No separate roofing-specific or demolition-specific permit application exists. IMPORTANT: this same application is also Burley's only vehicle for COMMERCIAL new construction and COMMERCIAL tenant-improvement/remodel work -- the City has no separate Commercial Building Permit or Tenant Improvement (TI) Permit product. The online iWorQ version of this form adds a 'Type of Use' dropdown (Commercial / Industrial / Other / Residential) rather than routing to a different application.

When you need this permit
- Building permit required for new construction, additions, alterations, repairs, re-roofing, moving a structure, or removing/demolishing a structure, per the City's single Building Permit Application work-type checkboxes
- Application must include property address of construction, owner information, contractor name and Idaho contractor license number, description of work, and declared valuation of work Contractor
- Building Permit Fee field is calculated and filled in by City Building Department staff based on declared valuation; no printed valuation-tier fee table was located on the application form or elsewhere on the City's published materials
- Permit fees are non-refundable and non-transferable
- Applications may be submitted on paper to the Building Department (2020 Park Avenue) or online via the City's iWorQ citizen portal
- Do not commence construction without first consulting the Chief Building Official, per the City's Building Department page
- No separate Commercial Building Permit or Tenant Improvement Permit exists -- commercial new construction and commercial tenant-improvement/remodel work use this same Building Permit Application; the online iWorQ form distinguishes project type only via a 'Type of Use' selector (Commercial / Industrial / Other / Residential)
- All commercial projects must have exiting clearly indicated in submitted plans; required submittals vary by project, per the iWorQ portal's Building Permit Application description
- A certificate-of-occupancy application must be submitted coincident with the building permit application for any building to be erected, altered, extended, or changed in use, per Municipal Code 5-14-3 -- most relevant in practice to commercial tenant-improvement / change-of-occupancy work; the certificate is issued within 7 days after the work is approved, and no excavation/erection/alteration/repair permit is issued until the certificate-of-occupancy application has been made

Tips
- The City of Burley's Building Permit Application uses simple checkboxes (New, Addition, Alteration, Repair, Roof, Move, Remove) rather than separate application forms per project type -- re-roofing and demolition/removal use this same general application, unlike Twin Falls (separate Residential Detached Accessory / Demolition applications) or Jerome (Cloudpermit categories).
- The Building Permit Fee line on the application is left blank for the Building Department to calculate; no printed valuation-based fee table is published, so declared valuation alone will not tell you the fee in advance -- call (208) 647-7086 for a fee estimate before applying.
- Contact the Chief Building Official before commencing any construction, per the City's own Building Department page.
- Despite this entry's slug/name, it is also the correct (and only) permit product for commercial new construction and commercial tenant-improvement/remodel work in Burley -- there is no separate commercial or TI-specific permit or fee schedule. The one documented commercial-specific plan requirement: submitted plans must clearly indicate exiting.
- A certificate-of-occupancy application (Municipal Code 5-14-3) is required alongside the building permit application for any building used or changed in use -- most relevant to commercial TI/change-of-occupancy work, where a change of tenant often means a change of use.
