Sign Permit (Zoning Certificate) in Unincorporated Campbell County, Wyoming
Campbell County has no separate 'sign permit' fee or application form — signage is regulated under Chapter 7 Zoning Regulations Section 40.25 (Signs) and is administered through the Zoning Certificate process (Chapter 7 Section 10.25), a Review Process 1 (administrative, no public hearing) approval. Table 10.10-1 explicitly lists 'Sign Permits (Section 40.25)' as a Review Process 1 action decided by the Applicable Director (Director of Public Works, Building Official, or Planner/Zoning Administrator).

When you need this permit
- Zoning Certification required prior to installing a sign (Chapter 7 § 10.25(2))
- Every Use District Chart assigns a Sign Category (A, B, C, D, E, or F) to each permitted use; the applicable category governs sign type, area, and height (§ 40.25(1))
- Sign Category A: wall-mounted and pedestal signs only, no internal illumination, no commercial messages permitted; max 4 sq. ft. for a detached-dwelling ID sign, 30 sq. ft. per sign face for a complex/subdivision ID sign
- Sign Category B: wall-mounted, marquee, and pedestal signs; max 40 sq. ft. per sign face
- Sign Categories C, D, and E: wall-mounted, marquee, pedestal, monument, and pole signs; area set by Table 40.25-1 based on the property's total linear road frontage (e.g., Category C at 100 ft frontage = 48 sq. ft.; Category E at 100 ft frontage = 94 sq. ft.)
- Sign Category F: all sign types listed above; the largest area allowances in Table 40.25-1 (e.g., 108 sq. ft. at 100 ft frontage)
- Height limits: pedestal signs ≤10 ft, monument signs ≤16 ft, pole signs ≤35 ft above average ground elevation; wall-mounted/marquee signs may not project above the roofline
- Monument and pole signs must be set back at least 5 ft from all property lines; Off-Premise signs must be set back at least 10 ft from property lines and stay 20 linear ft clear of utility lines/structures
- Off-Premise (billboard-type) signs are allowed only in Commercial, Industrial, A-L (Agricultural), and R-L (Rural Living) districts; a Conditional Use Permit is required if placed within 500 ft of a residential building, church, cemetery, or school; max 40 ft long x 14 ft high (560 sq. ft.) per face, plus limited embellishment extensions
- Electronic Graphic Display Signs (EGDS) must hold each message a minimum of 6 seconds with no more than a 1-2 second animated transition, be set back 100 ft minimum from an adjacent residential district (150 ft orientation restriction), and maintain 2,000 ft separation from any other EGDS; audio and flashing/scrolling effects are prohibited
- Prohibited devices include pennants, banners, and streamers (outside an approved Temporary Use Permit); strings/flashing/colored lights; twirlers, propellers, and inflatable signs; and any sign shaped/colored like a traffic sign or reading 'stop,' 'look,' or 'danger'
- Damaged/deteriorated signs must be repaired within 60 days of notice (one 90-day extension available); nonconforming signs must be removed within 30 days, and sign copy/graphics removed within 90 days, of the associated business/use ceasing

Tips
- Campbell County publishes no distinct 'sign permit' fee — signage goes through the same no-fee Zoning Certificate (Review Process 1) used for other administrative approvals; confirm your use's assigned Sign Category (A-F) in the applicable Use District Chart before designing your sign.
- Off-premise (billboard) signs are tightly restricted: allowed only in Commercial, Industrial, A-L, and R-L districts, and require a $200 Conditional Use Permit if within 500 ft of a home, church, cemetery, or school.
- Electronic Graphic Display Signs cannot use flashing, scrolling, or animated effects beyond a 1-2 second message transition, and must sit at least 2,000 ft from any other electronic display sign in the county.
