Fire Sprinkler / Fire Alarm System Permit in Littleton, Colorado
Fire protection for Littleton is provided by South Metro Fire Rescue (SMFR), which took over the Littleton Fire Department's duties in 2019. SMFR's Development & Construction Section publishes a detailed 'Systems and Other Fees' schedule (effective January 1, 2026) with itemized Plan Check, Inspection, and Total costs for fire protection system work, e.g.: NFPA 13 sprinkler system modification of ≤50 heads ($344.57 total), 51-300 heads ($414.31), >300 heads ($843.98); Fire Alarm System Modification Base Fee ($461.12, plus $6.12 per additional device); Fire Alarm Control Panel Replacement ($651.92). New fire sprinkler/alarm systems installed as part of new construction or tenant improvements are billed on a separate IBC-occupancy-classification table (base cost plus a per-100-sq-ft increment) rather than the flat modification fees.

When you need this permit
- Plans submitted via SMFR's Accela Permit Portal; over-the-counter review is available for alterations to existing wet-pipe fire sprinkler systems (light/ordinary hazard, up to 50 sprinkler heads, no hydraulic design impact) and for fire alarm system alterations involving substitution/relocation of up to 25 devices or addition of up to 10 new devices, when submitted by 11:00 a.m.
- New fire sprinkler and fire alarm systems installed as part of new construction or tenant improvements are billed on SMFR's IBC-occupancy-classification-based fee table (base cost + cost per additional 100 sq ft), not the flat modification fees
- All SMFR-issued permits and approved plans must remain on-site for the duration of the project; inspections will not be performed without them, and re-inspection fees may apply

Tips
- South Metro Fire Rescue's fee schedule prices sprinkler/alarm MODIFICATIONS to an existing system very differently from NEW systems installed with new construction — modifications use flat/tiered fees (e.g., $344.57 for ≤50 heads), while new systems in new construction/tenant improvements are billed on an IBC-occupancy-classification table.
- SMFR has its own 'Change of Use' fire-review fee ($587.99) separate from whatever change-of-use process the City of Littleton's own Building Division runs — budget for both if your project involves a fire-code-relevant occupancy change.
