When you need this permit

  • Decks exceeding 200 sq ft, attached to the dwelling, more than 30 inches above grade (within 36 inches of the deck), or serving the main exit door require a building/zoning permit

  • Footings: minimum 42 inches deep from finish grade to bottom of footing, 8 inches thick, extending 2 inches beyond post sides on all sides
  • Posts: 4x4 minimum up to 8 ft height; 5x6 required over 8 ft; must rest on footings, secured with a galvanized steel post base or equivalent
  • Decks 18 inches or less above finished grade must use pressure-treated or decay-resistant lumber (measured from the bottom of the floor joists)
  • Ledger boards require proper flashing (stainless steel, UV-resistant plastic, or G-185 galvanized steel) at the connection to the house
