When you need this permit
- Governed by the 2018 IBC/IRC as adopted by the Town of Center
- All contractors performing work valued at $1,500 or more must hold a current Town of Center Contractor's Registration (Ordinance 339), carrying minimum $50,000 bodily injury / $100,000 property damage liability insurance
- Colorado 811 utility locate notification required at least 72 hours before any digging
- A sketch plan (scale 1/8 inch = 10 feet minimum, on paper no smaller than 8.5x11 inches) showing building/structure locations, off-street parking, loading areas, service/refuse areas, ingress/egress, landscaping/screening, proposed setbacks and dimensions, existing trees/bushes, and all known utilities must be attached
- Permit valid for 180 days (6 months) from issue date; an end-of-permit inspection is required before a reissue, and reissued permits cost a flat $50.00

Inspection process
- 1
Pre-construction / Location Inspection
The Town's application explicitly states no construction may begin until the location has been inspected and a signed permit is in the applicant's possession and posted; setting forms does NOT constitute the start of construction
- 2
Final Inspection
End-of-permit inspection required at or before the 180-day permit expiration if work is not yet complete, as a condition of any permit reissue

Tips
- The Town's $50 application fee is separate from, and in addition to, the valuation-based permit fee itself — budget both, and note the application fee is non-refundable even if the permit is denied.
- Center's building permit is valid for only 180 days (6 months) — plan project timelines accordingly, since an end-of-permit inspection is required before any reissue, and reissues cost a flat $50 regardless of project size.
- Do not confuse the Town's own $1,500 Contractor's Registration threshold (Ordinance 339) with a building-permit-value threshold — ALL construction/remodeling work requires a building permit application regardless of value, with narrow fee-free exceptions only for like-for-like door/window swaps and fence upgrades.
