Tips
- Inspection scheduling must be completed by 4:30 PM the business day before the requested time; cancellations must be made by 3:00 PM the business day before — per the Tooele City Building Permit application form.
- A permit becomes null and void if work is not commenced within 180 days of approval, or if work is suspended for 180 days or more after commencement.
- Tooele City Community Development office is open Monday–Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM (no listed Friday closure, unlike some neighboring Utah County cities).
- Applications can be submitted online through the Tooele City Building Permit Portal (tooelecity.portal.iworq.net/portalhome/tooelecity) per the Applications & Forms page.
- Water rights transfer (0.45 acre-feet for residential structures under Tooele City Code Chapter 7-26) is a separate non-cash requirement that must be satisfied prior to permit issuance — contact the City Engineer to determine the amount required for a specific property.
- Solar panel (PV) installations — rooftop or ground-mounted — are permitted through this same Building Permit for the structural/mounting work, with the interconnection wiring covered under standard electrical permitting; Tooele City does not publish a separate solar permit application, checklist, or fee line item (re-checked on the current Fee Schedule and Applications & Forms pages, 2026-07-19), unlike Taylorsville's dedicated 'Solar P.V. Systems' (B-7) form or Cache/Box Elder County's itemized solar fees. Confirm the exact submittal package with Community Development, (435) 843-2132, before applying.
- The Fee Schedule does note that a separate 'Inspection Fee' (rather than the full valuation-based building fee) applies to permits for 'specialty work such as electrical work only' — a standalone EV charger circuit would likely fall under that category; confirm with Community Development, (435) 843-2132, before applying.
