Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Permit in Mount Crested Butte, Colorado
Required for rooftop or ground-mounted solar photovoltaic installation in the Town of Mt. Crested Butte. The Town's own Building Division does NOT issue or inspect electrical permits at all — electrical work, including PV wiring and utility interconnection, is handled entirely by the Colorado State Electrical Board (Division of Professions and Occupations), capped at $500 for a residential permit and $1,000 for a commercial permit under the statewide solar permit fee cap, C.R.S. § 24-48.5-113 (HB21-1284). The Town's own Building Permit (valuation-based Table 1-A fee, or the Design Review 'no drawings/engineering' $100 fee for simple roof-mounted work) covers only the structural/mounting scope. The Town has adopted the Model Colorado Electric and Solar Ready Code provisions for new construction.

When you need this permit
- Town Building Permit required for the array mounting/structural scope, submitted via the Town's GovWell online portal
- Electrical permit for PV wiring/interconnection must be obtained directly from the Colorado State Electrical Board (dpo.colorado.gov/Electrical), NOT from the Town — the Town's Building Division does not issue or inspect electrical permits
- Colorado State Electrical Board Solar/Alternative Energy System permits may use a SolarApp+ or Symbium expedited plan review pathway per the Board's published process
- State Electrical Board permit is valid for one year from the date of issuance
- Design Review approval required through the Community Development Department; a solar-only installation that does not require drawings/engineering (e.g., a straightforward roof-mount) falls under the $100 Design Review fee tier; installations requiring drawings/engineering are billed at the $200+ tier

Tips
- Do not expect the Town's GovWell portal to cover the electrical trade for a solar installation — the Colorado State Electrical Board handles PV wiring/interconnection permitting and inspection directly, entirely separate from the Town's own Building Permit and Design Review process.
- A simple roof-mounted solar array that does not require drawings/engineering may qualify for the Town's lower $100 Design Review fee tier rather than the $200+ tier that applies to projects requiring structural drawings.
- Both the residential ($500) and commercial ($1,000) Colorado State Electrical Board solar permit fees are hard caps set by state law (HB21-1284/C.R.S. § 24-48.5-113), not Town-set fees.
