Residential Building Permit (New Construction) in Craig, Colorado
Required for new construction of single-family and two-family dwellings, and detached/multi-dwelling residential buildings, within the Craig/Moffat County Regional Building Department's joint jurisdiction (City of Craig plus all of Moffat County except the Town of Dinosaur). Administered under the jointly-adopted 2018 IBC/IRC. Electrical permitting, plan review, and inspection are handled entirely by the State of Colorado (DORA), not this department.

When you need this permit
- Must comply with Table R301.2(1) Climatic and Geographic Design Criteria: 115 mph wind speed, Seismic Design Category B, 48-inch frost line depth, Ice Barrier Underlayment required, 40 psf non-reducible roof snow load (may be higher at elevation per Building Official determination, up to 100 psf on the west edge of the county)
- 2 sets of plans including: Site Plan (address, owner contact info, footprint drawn to scale with lot-line/existing-structure distances, adjacent streets/alleys/easements), Soils Analysis/Report, Foundation Design Drawings stamped by a Colorado-licensed engineer, Elevation drawings, Floor plan with plumbing/HVAC fixture locations and window/door sizes, Framing details for load-bearing components, engineered beam/girder/joist/truss drawings where applicable
- Sewer/Water Tap Application required with subdivision/block/lot legal description and property owner and plumbing contractor signatures
- Names of General, Plumbing, and Mechanical contractors required — all contractors must hold the applicable City of Craig or Moffat County license/registration depending on jurisdiction
- A bona-fide owner-occupant of a single-family dwelling may self-perform all labor if the home will be their actual primary residence upon completion Owner-builder
- Applications received on or after July 1, 2026 are subject to the 2025 Colorado Wildfire Resiliency Code (CWRC); the applicable Class 1/Class 2 requirements depend on the property's location on the Colorado Resiliency Code Map
- Electrical work is NOT part of this permit's scope — a separate electrical permit must be obtained directly from DORA's State Electrical Board; rough and final electrical inspections are performed by a State inspector, not the local building department
- IRC Section R313 (automatic residential fire sprinklers) is deleted locally — sprinklers are not required in 1-2 family dwellings
- Prior to any excavation, the owner/contractor must contact the Utility Notification Center of Colorado (UNCC), 1-800-922-1987

Tips
- Electrical work is entirely state-administered here — do not expect the local Building Department to inspect or approve electrical work; the State of Colorado (DORA, Division of Professions and Occupations) issues its own separate electrical permit and performs its own rough and final electrical inspections.
- The department's flat $100 building permit fee (for structures over 200 sq ft) is a meaningfully simpler and typically far cheaper model than the valuation-based sliding fee schedules used by other Colorado mountain-region departments in this corpus (e.g., RCRBD/Steamboat Springs) — confirm this flat fee still applies to your specific project scope directly with the Building Official, since no separate published valuation-based schedule was found for larger or commercial new-construction projects.
- If your project starts on/after July 1, 2026, budget for Colorado Wildfire Resiliency Code compliance — check the Colorado Resiliency Code Map by address/parcel first to know whether Class 1 or Class 2 requirements (or none) apply to your site.
