When you need this permit
- Shingle repair or replacement not exceeding 100 sq ft (one square) of covering per building is exempt from permit, per Ordinance No. 1029's amendment to IBC Section 105.2 item 14
- Where the existing roof already has two or more layers of any roof covering, all old material must be removed — roof re-cover (overlay) is NOT allowed in that case (IRC R908.3.1.1)
- Ice barrier is required, extending from the lowest roof edges to at least 24 inches inside the exterior wall line (IRC R905.1.2)
- Asphalt shingles must be fastened to solidly sheathed decks (R905.2.1); minimum 2:12 (17%) slope required for asphalt shingles (R905.2.2)
- Drip edge required on all edges including rakes, minimum 2-inch overlap (R905.2.8.5); double underlayment required for 2:12 up to 4:12 slopes (Table R905.1.1(2))
- Sidewalls must be step-flashed; continuous flashing at sidewalls is not acceptable (R905.2.8.3)
- Roofing material must be rated for 115 mph sustained wind per IRC Table R301.2(1).1 / Table R905.2.4.1
- Homeowners may pull the roof permit without a contractor's license only if the house is their primary residence and no contractor performs the work Owner-builderContractor
