Codes adopted
Colorado has no statewide-mandated building code edition. Under the Colorado Constitution's home-rule provisions (art. XX, home rule for municipalities since 1902; home rule for counties since 1970), building codes and zoning are an enumerated home-rule charter power, so cities and counties adopt and amend their own construction codes independently — predominantly the I-Codes, with editions and local amendments varying by jurisdiction. The one statewide floor is for energy: HB22-1362 (2022) created the Energy Code Board (jointly appointed by the Colorado Energy Office and the Department of Local Affairs) and requires that, on or after July 1, 2023 and before July 1, 2026, any municipality or county that adopts or updates a building code must adopt and enforce an energy code achieving performance equivalent to or better than the 2021 IECC together with the board's Model Electric Ready and Solar Ready Code (which includes electric-ready, EV-ready, and solar-ready provisions); from July 1, 2026 onward the floor shifts to the board's Model Low Energy and Carbon Code or an equivalent. Electrical and plumbing permitting defaults to the Colorado State Electrical Board and State Plumbing Board (within DORA's Division of Professions and Occupations) — the state issues permits and inspects statewide except in counties/jurisdictions that operate their own certified Electrical or Plumbing Inspection Program, in which case the local program has authority instead. Always confirm the currently adopted code edition, local amendments, and inspection authority (state board vs. local program) with the specific jurisdiction before submitting plans.
- 2024 International Residential Code (IRC) — per the '2026 SAFEbuilt Residential Application Check List' (Town of Ault Building Permits page, Helpful/Residential resource): 'All submittal information must comply with the 2024 I-codes and the 2023 NEC.'
- 2024 International Building Code (IBC) — per the SAFEbuilt 'New Commercial Plan Submittal Procedure' and 'Commercial Tenant Finish/Remodel Plan Submittal Procedure' documents on the Town of Ault Building Permits page, both headed '2024 INTERNATIONAL CODES.'
- 2024 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) — required compliance documentation (ResCheck or energy rating report) explicitly named in the SAFEbuilt Residential Application Check List; commercial submittal procedures likewise require 'Documentation showing compliance with the 2024 IECC.'
- 2023 National Electrical Code (NEC) — explicitly named in the SAFEbuilt Residential Application Check List ('...and the 2023 NEC').
- 2024 International Mechanical Code (IMC) / International Plumbing Code (IPC) — inferred from the SAFEbuilt submittal procedures' consistent requirement of 'Mechanical/Plumbing Plans' stamped by a Colorado-licensed engineer, cross-referenced against the same '2024 INTERNATIONAL CODES' heading used for the IBC/IECC citation on the same documents; not independently named by edition number in the source text, so carried at 'partial' confidence for the specific IMC/IPC edition number. 2026-07-23 re-chase: the Town's own codified Municipal Code (Title 15 Ch.04, Sections 030/060), recovered via Wayback Machine archive of the now-defunct myaultgov.org portal (Sec. 030 Mechanical captured 2022-12-05: 'International Mechanical Code, 2018 Edition'; Sec. 060 Plumbing captured 2022-12-05: 'International Plumbing Code, 2012 Edition'), shows both trade codes were LAST codified at pre-2024 editions — older than, and in unresolved tension with, SAFEbuilt's current 2024-I-code submittal language; no live, currently-hosted Municipal Code exists to confirm whether these sections have since been amended to 2024 editions, so the specific currently-governing IMC/IPC edition numbers remain genuinely unconfirmed and are NOT asserted as '2024' anywhere in this file.
- 1997 Uniform Building Code (UBC), Table 1-A — still the operative VALUATION-BASED FEE TABLE per the Town's 'Building Permit Fee Schedule' (Exhibit B — Fee Schedule for Services, a SAFEbuilt consultant-services fee exhibit posted on the Town's Building Permits resource list, last modified 5/19/24). This is a fee-calculation table, not a life-safety code edition, and is retained purely because it is the Town's actual current, published fee mechanism — it does not indicate the Town is still enforcing 1997 UBC life-safety provisions, which are superseded by the 2024 I-codes cited above.
- No separate Ault-specific building-code-adoption ordinance was found published online: the Town of Ault Municipal Code page (aultcolorado.gov/MuniCode) states 'A Copy of the Ault Municipal Code is Available Upon Request' and is not hosted on Municode/eCode360 or any other public code-hosting platform; the Town's online Document Archive 'Ordinances' folder contains only a 'Non-Certified Copy of 2024 Model Traffic Code' (unrelated to building codes). The SAFEbuilt submittal-requirement documents (which explicitly compel 2024 I-code / 2023 NEC compliance and are hosted directly on the Town's own Building Permits page) are therefore treated as the governing, currently-operative code-adoption source for this file, consistent with SAFEbuilt Colorado being Ault's contracted building official/plan-review/inspection provider (per Exhibit B of the Town-SAFEbuilt consultant services agreement).
Permit types & fees
Residential Building Permit (New Construction)
Required for new single-family, two-family, and townhome construction in the Town of Ault. Plan review, building official services, and inspections are performed by SAFEbuilt Colorado under contract to the Town, applying the 2024 IRC, 2024 IECC, and 2023 NEC.
Residential Addition / Remodel Permit
Required for additions and remodels to existing residential structures in Ault, reviewed by SAFEbuilt Colorado under the same submittal framework as new residential construction, scaled to the scope of work.
Electrical Permit
Required for electrical installation, alteration, or repair work in Ault. Fees are set under the State of Colorado Electrical Board fee schedule plus a 15% local surcharge (the maximum allowed under CRS 12-23-117(3)); permit issuance and inspection are administered locally by SAFEbuilt Colorado under contract to the Town, applying the 2023 NEC.
EV Charger / EVSE Permit
Required for installation of a residential electric vehicle charging circuit in Ault. Filed as an electrical permit and inspected locally by SAFEbuilt Colorado under contract to the Town, applying the 2023 NEC. No EV-charger-specific fee line item is published in the Town's Exhibit B Fee Schedule — an EV charger circuit is billed under the same mechanism as all other electrical work: the current State of Colorado Electrical Board fee schedule plus the maximum 15% local surcharge allowed under CRS 12-23-117(3).
Plumbing Permit
Required for plumbing installation, alteration, or repair in Ault. Unlike electrical permits, plumbing permit fees are NOT tied to a state board fee schedule — they use the Town's own 1997 UBC Table 1-A valuation-based fee table, administered locally by SAFEbuilt Colorado.
Mechanical / HVAC Permit
Required for heating, cooling, and ventilation equipment installation or replacement in Ault, administered locally by SAFEbuilt Colorado using the Town's 1997 UBC Table 1-A valuation-based fee schedule.
Roofing Permit (Re-Roof)
Required for re-roofing work in Ault. Billed as a flat 'Single Stop Project' fee rather than the valuation-based table. Governed by 2024 IRC Section R908 re-roofing provisions per SAFEbuilt's Building Guide for Homeowners.
Accessory Structure Permit (incl. Accessory Dwelling / Structures)
Covers accessory structures in Ault (garages, sheds, accessory buildings, and similar), reviewed under 2024 IRC Accessory Structures provisions per SAFEbuilt's Building Guide for Homeowners. Ault's own Zoning Code (Title 15, Chapter 03) separately recognizes 'Accessory dwelling (incl. "carriage units")' as a distinct accessory-use category, permitted by right in the Town Residential, Rural Residential, and Agricultural districts (not listed as an allowed use in Commercial/Industrial), counted at .33 units toward a district's maximum density; the building-permit submittal process itself is not ADU-specific, so this entry still covers the closest genuinely-applicable building-permit pathway.
Demolition Permit
Required for demolition of structures within Ault town limits. Billed as a flat 'Single Stop Project' fee.
Commercial Tenant Finish / Remodel Permit
Required for commercial tenant finish and remodel work in Ault. Reviewed by SAFEbuilt Colorado under the 2024 International Codes per the Town's Commercial Tenant Finish/Remodel Plan Submittal Procedure.
Deck / Covered Patio Permit
Required for deck and patio-cover/carport construction in Ault, reviewed under 2024 IRC provisions per SAFEbuilt's Building Guides for Homeowners (separate Decks Guide and Patio Covers/Carports Guide).
Furnace / Water Heater Replacement Permit
Straightforward like-for-like replacement of a furnace, air conditioner, or water heater in Ault, billed as a flat 'Single Stop Project' fee distinct from the valuation-based table.
Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Permit
Ault has no separate solar/photovoltaic permit type; rooftop or ground-mounted PV is permitted as a combined Building Permit (structural/racking, 1997 UBC valuation-based table, Exhibit B) and Electrical Permit (State of Colorado Electrical Board fee schedule plus the Town's 15% local surcharge), administered locally by SAFEbuilt Colorado under contract to the Town. As in every Colorado jurisdiction, the combined total of all governmental fees for the installation is capped by state law at $500 for a residential system and $1,000 for a commercial system (C.R.S. § 24-48.5-113, enacted by HB21-1284).

Tips & gotchas
- Ault contracts its building official, plan review, and inspection functions to SAFEbuilt Colorado — expect to interact with SAFEbuilt (not Town staff directly) for plan review correspondence and inspection scheduling, though applications and fee payment are administered through the Town.
- Electrical permit fees are the one trade that pass through a state fee schedule (Colorado State Electrical Board, +15% local surcharge, the statutory maximum under CRS 12-23-117(3)) — every other permit type (building, plumbing, mechanical) uses the Town's own 1997 UBC Table 1-A valuation-based fee table or the flat Single Stop Projects fees, set locally.
- A set of 'Single Stop Project' flat fees applies to common small projects instead of the valuation table: Furnace/AC $70, Roof re-shingle $60, Water Heater $60, Lawn Sprinkler System $60, Siding/Window Replacement $70, Sales Trailers/Modular Units $75, Demolition $50.
- Ault's Municipal Code is not published online — it is available upon request only from Town Hall, and is not hosted on Municode/eCode360. The governing, currently-operative building-code-edition information for this file comes from SAFEbuilt's own submittal-checklist documents (which explicitly cite 2024 I-codes/2023 NEC), hosted directly on the Town's Building Permits page, since no separate online code-adoption ordinance could be located after checking both the MuniCode page and the Document Archive's Ordinances folder directly.
- Several SAFEbuilt documents hosted on Ault's Building Permits page are visibly shared templates used across SAFEbuilt's other Weld County client towns (Windsor, Timnath) and contain unedited references to those other towns (e.g., 'Town of Windsor Approved Site Plan,' 'windsor@safebuilt.com,' 'THE TOWN OF TIMNATH'). This file treats the general code/submittal-requirement content of those documents as applicable to Ault (since SAFEbuilt is genuinely Ault's contracted reviewer and the documents are hosted on Ault's own site) but does NOT attribute the other towns' specific contact emails or named exceptions to Ault.
- New single-family/two-family/townhome construction must document EV-ready, Solar-ready, and Electric-ready provisions on submitted plans — this reflects Colorado's HB22-1362 statewide energy-code floor (2021 IECC baseline / electrification-readiness window, July 2023-July 2026) and is independently confirmed by Ault's own 2026 SAFEbuilt Residential Application Check List, not merely assumed from the statute.
- No numeric plan-review or permit-issuance turnaround (days/weeks) is published anywhere in the Town's building-permit materials — the Building Permits page, every SAFEbuilt submittal-procedure document, and the Exhibit B fee schedule were all checked directly and none states a turnaround. Colorado is home-rule with no statewide review-time statute; every permitType in this file carries an honest null/unverified reviewTimelineDays with a documented chase trail.
- The Town's 'Building Permit Inspections,' 'Applications,' and 'General FAQ's' sections on the Building Permits webpage render genuinely empty as of this review (confirmed via direct DOM inspection after full page load, not a scraping limitation) — there is no additional inspection-scheduling procedure or FAQ content beyond what is captured in the SAFEbuilt documents cited throughout this file.
- The Town of Ault's website (Munibit CMS) loads its Building Permits document list dynamically via client-side JavaScript with nested expandable tree categories — a plain fetch or simple scrape will show only 'No data is available' placeholders; the underlying documents were recovered by driving a live browser session to expand each category and read the resulting DOM's data-url attributes directly.
