When you need this permit
- Governed by 2024 IRC Section R908 (Reroofing) and Section R806 (Roof Ventilation) as locally adopted
- No more than two (2) layers of roofing are allowed upon completion
- Roof replacement (tear-off to the deck) is required where the existing roof is water-soaked/deteriorated, is wood shake/slate/clay/cement/asbestos-cement tile, or already has two or more layers
- Ice and water shield is required on all roofs, per the SAFEbuilt Re-Roof Guide's Wind/Weather Resistance section
- Asphalt shingles must be tested to ASTM D 7158 and meet IRC Table R905.2.4.1(1) for an ultimate design wind speed of 115 mph; impact-resistant shingles are NOT required (the guide notes this requirement applies only in the Town of Timnath, not Dacono)
- Homeowners may act as their own installer for a re-roof
- Only a Final Roof inspection is required for standard residential re-roofs; mid-roof inspections are not required on residential projects per the guide (may be required for certain heavier roofing materials, e.g. tile/metal exceeding 7.5 psf)

Tips
- Homeowners may legally perform their own re-roof work in Dacono without hiring a licensed contractor, per SAFEbuilt's published FAQ, but the permit holder must still call for the required Final Roof inspection. Contractor
- No more than two layers of roofing are allowed — if your roof already has two layers or is deteriorated/wood shake/tile, a full tear-off to the deck is required.
- Impact-resistant shingles are explicitly NOT required in Dacono (the guide notes that requirement is specific to the Town of Timnath) — don't over-spec unless your HOA requires it separately.
